The Boilermaker and other races

I have been running for several years, but have to admit I shy away from racing. I've raced in the Coop Loop twice and the wonderful GOTR family run. It seems like everyone has run the Boilermaker and my friend asked me to help her train so I figured I might as well jump on the band wagon and add the steamy July jaunt to my list. I'm officially registered and have told my husband he and my daughter will be standing on the sidelines with sign in hand cheering me on.

Help! I'm looking for tips about preparing for the Boilermaker & for insights about the actual race.

Haven't signed up yet? www.boilermaker.com

Any other suggestions for races around NY?

ok, so before i left for a week i wanted to share these running routes in/around coop. most of them start from my house (25 pioneer) but can be adapted to a different location relatively easily.
1) Chicken Farm Hill
Make a right out of my driveway and then a right onto Lake Street, left onto Main Street, cross the bridge and head straight up towards Woodside Hall (this is a slight incline) The road curves and Chicken Farm Hill Road (seasonal) is on your Right. Go up - this is a pretty long, steep at times incline. It winds past the state police canine training unit, trail to star field, etc. Eventually it becomes a gradual downhill Continue straight through the yield/stop sign and you will end up on middlefield center road. Take a right and follow middlefield center road back towards cooperstown, down by the gym, make a left onto walnut, a right onto chestnut (past the great american) through the light at main st. and then a right onto lake st. and a right onto pioneer. this can be modified many different ways depending on where you are starting and ending your route. This way is about 4 or 4.5 miles (i'm not that great with exact mileage)

2)River Road to 28- approx. 8 miles
Start on Pioneer St and make a R onto Lake Street and head up Esli Ave, R on Middlefield Center road, quick L and then R onto River Road. follow River Road for about 3.5 miles and then make a Right on the road that connects to Route 28. Make a R onto 28 and follow back into Cooperstown. This is a great distance run with some straightaways, uphills and downhills. Word to the wise- be careful of the time of day you are running on 28 as people can be real jerks about pedestrians especially around commuter time. This is my usual long weekend run.

3) Fly Creek/Irish Hill- 4.8 miles
Left at onto Lake St. from Pioneer St. Left on Nelson, Right on Main. Follow Main Street up past Bruce Hall to Irish Hill. Up Irish Hill and then follow back down to 28. Take a left on 28 and follow towards town. Right onto the road by the nursing home. Right onto main street (you come out on the one way by the railroad tracks). Cross over and go down Walnut Ave. Right on Susquehanna, past the gym, Left on Middlefield Center Road, Left on Esli Ave, Left onto Main Street, Right on Lake and back to Pioneer. All of these routes are also great to do backwards too because some are easier one way than the other!

4) Lost Lake/Behind The Farmers' Museum- approx. 6ish miles
This route adds a little trail running in addition to running on the road.
Left at onto Lake St. from Pioneer St. Left on Nelson, Right on Main. Follow Main Street up past Bruce Hall to Irish Hill. Up Irish Hill and bear R towards the dead end. There is a trail that begins at the end of the road (there are metal posts marking it). The trail takes you above The Farmers' Museum, past the biological field station's Lost Lake and ends in the backyard of a gigantic house on Glimmerglen Road. You have to run down there driveway to get to the road but it's not a big deal because the drive is pretty much out of view of the house. Make a Right onto Glimmerglen Road and then a Right onto Lake Route (Route 80) and follow it back into town.

5) lastly for now... an extension on the Chicken Farm Route-- when you get to Middlefield Center road take a LEFT and then a Right onto Hade Hollow, go up a hill and then take a right on Pink Street. About halfway down on the left there is a pond that sometimes has some geese in it-- i would advise you to run on the other side of the road here. Pink Street meets Middlefield Center Road, take a Left and then follow back around town.
This adds another 1 or 1.5 miles onto the loop.
